The Digital Book Club
How It Works:
9 - 12
Week 1 | Meet your fellow book club readers through live video introductions (optional). Begin reading the book. An introductory video will be released into the classroom to help guide readers on scheduling their reading and our book club reading focus (i.e. character development, plot, theme, genre, etc.).
Week 2 | Continue reading the book. Online discussion questions will be posted inside of the digital platform. Readers will write their responses to the question and discuss responses with other readers. Readers will receive feedback on their weekly posts to push their thinking forward.
Week 3 | Continuation of reading and discussion questions. This week we’ll zero in on the book study focus (i.e. character development, plot, theme, genre, etc.). Readers will begin developing a theory about the book, based on the broader focus question for the book study. Feedback will continue to be provided on student responses.
Week 4 | Readers will share their final thoughts and theories about the book. They’ll share a quote that supports their theory and explain how they came to their conclusion about the book.
Book club count
Our book club is offered in a convenient online space to allow your child access from anywhere at any time. Upon enrolling in the book club, readers and families will receive access to the digital learning space where weekly discussions take place.
A certified Reading Specialist will post reading discussion questions to guide readers towards deeper meaning and comprehension. We know that after 3rd grade, reading is more about making meaning that decoding words. At this age, students are reading to learn. Being able to comprehend increasingly complex texts from chapter books and novels involves being able to decode story structure and writing style.
Our book clubs offer students a unique opportunity to apply the skills they learn in school to practice flexing their reading and literary analysis muscles in a safe and collaborative space. Not only will readers be able to stretch their thinking muscles through writing about what they read, but they’ll also be able to discuss their thinking with other readers.
Peer learning is a great way to expose students to new perspectives, while encouraging academic dialogue and pushing critical thinking. We strive to encourage readers to read for understanding about what a book is saying literally and figuratively about the world (people, places and moments in time).
Reading checkpoints will be available for students to monitor their comprehension while reading (with or without parent support). Parents will also have access to their child’s login on the platform to monitor their child’s discussion contributions, as well as the flow of the full book club discussion.
We encourage parents to immerse themselves as much or as little in the book club with their reader as they choose. Parents can read with their child, use the weekly discussion questions as at-home talking points or simply check-in inside of our online discussion board (available for print).
Join a group of young readers from around the world reading the same book each month and collaborating to share their questions & ideas to build comprehension.
Why it Works:
When readers have an opportunity to talk and write about what they read, they gain a deeper of understanding and new insights.
Students at this age are socially inclined. Book clubs give them an outlet to learn from and with each other, while learning to respect and appreciate each other’s perspectives.
Reading comprehension is a muscle that requires a practice of habit. Book clubs offer an opportunity to practice reading, not just for “reading’s sake,” but to expand the ability to stretch one’s thinking about literature.
Are you ready for your child to have a better grasp on what they read?

My son really enjoyed the book club this summer, and I am so grateful.
What I love most about the summer book club is that we all had these cool ideas and predictions about the book. I will miss the video chats online. The book we read was so inspiring and taught us to have courage.
-Paije, 6th grader
My daughter had a wonderful experience. She loved the book from the summer book club. The digital platform is very easy to work with.
Mrs. Wilson is a phenomenal educator who cares passionately for the success of every child. She provides fun tools for students that build better readers. Mrs. Wilson has tutored my son since the 5th grade. She not only increased his desire to read, but to enjoy reading. The reader's tool box of reading strategies she provided was a success for my son. He is now a rising junior in high school.
